Today it's over 50,000. The streets around downtown, near 6th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue, hold many of the homes built long before the big tracts.

Older homes often have older heat. Do you know what yours is? Some still use the original heater, or one installed decades ago. Others were upgraded in pieces. Knowing what you have is the first step.

Stewart Park is being rebuilt, so the festival moved to Noble Creek Park on Oak Valley Parkway in 2024. Looking for furnace service in Downtown Beaumont?

What kind of heater do you have in downtown Beaumont?

Not every older home has a central furnace. Some heat with a wall or floor unit. Each type fails differently, and each needs a different kind of pro.

TypeWhere you'll find itCommon problems
Central forced-air furnaceCloset, garage or attic, with ducts to each roomWorn ignitor or thermocouple, dirty flame sensor, weak blower motor
Wall furnaceBuilt into an interior wall, with a grillePilot light won't stay lit, weak heat, dust buildup
Floor furnaceA metal grate in the floor, usually in a hallwayPilot problems, a grate that gets very hot, poor venting
Electric baseboard or wall heaterAlong walls in individual roomsBurned-out elements, tripped breakers

Wall and floor furnaces heat mostly the room they're in, so far bedrooms stay cold and the thermostat on the wall may not reflect the whole house. If you're thinking of upgrading to central heat, see our furnace replacement guide.

Pilot lights

Standing pilot lights and thermocouples in older furnaces

Many older heaters use a standing pilot light, a small flame that burns all the time. Next to it, a thermocouple tells the gas valve it's safe to open.

When the thermocouple wears out, the pilot goes out and the heat stops.

Did your pilot go out after the gas was turned off, or after a storm? SoCalGas offers pilot relights at no charge, and the visit can include a basic safety check.

If it keeps going out, a heating pro should check the thermocouple, the pilot tube and the gas valve.

A yellow pilot or burner flame isn't normal. It means gas isn't burning cleanly and can make carbon monoxide.

Turn the heater off and call. Smell gas? Leave first, then call SoCalGas or 911 from outside.

Ducts and safety

Is old furnace ductwork safe to work around?

Ducts in older homes may be leaky, crushed or poorly connected, so warm air and airflow end up in the attic or crawl space. Some very old duct wrap and furnace insulation contained asbestos.

It's usually safe if left alone. Don't cut, scrape or sweep it. Ask the pro to note it before any work starts.

Thinking about a full upgrade? Older homes also tend to have older venting.

A furnace replacement here may mean new vent pipe, a new gas line connection or electrical work. That's normal.

A good installer explains it upfront and pulls the City of Beaumont permit.

FAQ

Downtown Beaumont furnace repair FAQs

Can a wall furnace or floor furnace be repaired?

Often, yes. Pilot assemblies, thermocouples and gas valves can usually be replaced.

Very old units may have parts that are hard to find. In that case, a pro may suggest a newer wall unit or a switch to central heat.

Ask them to explain both options and show you the worn part.

Why won't the pilot light on my old heater stay lit?

Usually a worn thermocouple. A dirty pilot tube, a draft or a weak gas valve can cause it too.

SoCalGas customers can schedule a pilot relight at no charge, and the visit can include a basic safety check. If it keeps going out after that, a heating pro should test the parts with a meter.

Is a floor furnace safe?

It can be, if it's working right and the grate stays clear. The grate gets very hot, so keep rugs, toys and pets off it.

A yellow flame, soot or a smell of gas means turn it off and call. Keep CO alarms near bedrooms, and have the venting checked once a year.

My home has old duct wrap. Is it dangerous?

Usually not, if it's left alone. Some very old duct wrap and furnace insulation contained asbestos.

Don't cut, scrape or sweep it. Tell the heating pro before any work starts, so they can plan around it or suggest testing. Most furnace repairs never need to touch it at all.

Should I switch from a wall furnace to central heat?

It depends on your home and your plans. Central heat warms every room evenly but may need new ductwork, venting, a gas line change and a City of Beaumont permit.

A newer wall furnace is simpler and faster. Ask for both options and compare them in writing before you decide anything.
